One ten-question session on school days is plenty for Years 1–3. Years 4–6 benefit from two sessions plus one writing task a week. Short and regular beats long and rare.
Ask 'what is the question really asking?' and 'how did you decide?'. Let your child read the explanation after each question — that is where the learning happens.

Use the Writing Desk once a week. Plan for two minutes, write for fifteen, then read it aloud together and fix one thing only.
Practise timing occasionally, not constantly. Skipping a hard question and coming back is a skill worth rehearsing.
